In that time, I figured out a few parameters that make this reflection truly mine: 1. Writing suits me – I ramble fast, then edit later. 2. Humor is my hook – I enjoy making people smile more than producing dry academic content. 3. Application over explanation – If this is about understanding business design, why not apply it? So I did.
Intro
Pop culture is filled with villains who could’ve really benefited from a little strategic thinking. I mean:
- Why did Voldemort stop at seven Horcruxes? (”Less Wrong” fixed that.)
- Why did the Death Star have a single vent that led straight to the core? (An engineer is not happy.)
- Did the Terminators really have to kill Sarah Connor? (We will save that rant for another day )
But empowering villains isn’t exactly my jam.
Which is why I’ve chosen Thanos—not your typical villain. He had good intentions (ish). Just…a terribly flawed approach. So let’s see what would’ve happened if he attended a crash course at Design Thinking.

The Original Problem (According to Thanos)
💀 The Implemented "Solution”
It’s worth noting that Thanos originally proposed this plan on Titan before acquiring the Infinity Stones. He was rejected.
Titan collapsed anyway, This only reinforced his commitment to the snap, now with galactic reach and six glowing rocks.
📣 End-User Feedback (Snap Reviews)
People do acknowledge overpopulation as a problem, but his “snap” wasn’t exactly a customer-friendly solution. It lacked empathy and created trauma.
Overall, the survivor sentiment is overwhelmingly negative. A few quotes from Earth-based focus groups:

Even those who agreed on the problem of overpopulation weren’t thrilled about the solution. This was one of many reasons behind the formation of the massive superhero coalition that ultimately undid Thanos' work. In fact, the rise of a multi-species, cross-temporal superhero alliance should’ve been an early signal of user dissatisfaction.

Reframing the problem: Empathy First
To explore this properly, let’s apply the most basic tool in the design thinking toolkit: an empathy map. Because, if you’re going to play god, the least you can do is understand your users.

This is where Thanos mis-stepped: he solved for efficiency, not for empathy. He treated life as a data set, not a lived experience. And in doing so, he mistook symptoms for root causes.

Maybe Titan didn’t need fewer people — it needed more purpose.
What Thanos framed as a population crisis was, in reality, a failure of systems. The real issue wasn't how many people existed, but how resources were distributed and whether individuals had meaningful ways to participate in their communities.
The movies don’t make it clear whether Titan suffered from resource distribution problems or something more existential. But the signs are familiar: disconnection, power struggles, and a loss of collective momentum. These aren’t numerical problems. They’re design problems.
Keeping people engaged — through education, creativity, and meaningful work — is more than idealism. It’s structural. And perhaps that was the true gap on Titan.
“Overpopulation isn’t the problem. It’s distribution. And dignity.”
That’s the real brief. Not “kill fewer people.” But “build better systems.”

Thanos wasn’t wrong about recognizing strain. But he was catastrophically wrong about how to respond to it.
The universe didn’t need fewer people. It needed better systems, more thoughtful design, and leaders who could look beyond the brute-force solutions of the past. With infinite power, Thanos could have created worlds, redistributed abundance, and shaped a more balanced cosmos. Instead, he reached for the fastest fix — the Snap — and, in doing so, became the very problem he wanted to solve.
Design thinking doesn’t promise perfection. But it offers something villains rarely reach for: the patience to understand, the humility to iterate, and the creativity to build solutions that actually last.
Snap solutions are tempting. Sustainable ones take work.
